In this wildly over-the-top and unique piece of sensationally visual cinema, dangerously beautiful superstar model LiLiCo has the world at her feet. She also has a secret: she owes her entire ‘perfect’ body to plastic surgery. When a naturally gorgeous new talent arrives on the scene, LiLiCo’s reign is threatened – but this is just a precursor to her startling physical and psychological collapse. Erika Sawajiri’s controversial and terrifying central performance was nominated for a Japanese Academy Award prize.

Based on the popular manga by Kyoko Okazaki and directed by fashion photographer Mika (Sakuran) Ninagawa, Helter Skelter is a crazed, provocative and hallucinogenic tour-du-force. Starring Erika Sawajiri,  Kaori Momoi, Kiko Mizuhara, Kozue Yoshikawa, Mieko Harada and Shinobu Terajima (nominated for best supporting actress).

ABOUT THE TORONTO JAPANESE FILM FESTIVAL

tjff-poster-frontThe Toronto Japanese Film Festival is dedicated to showcasing the finest Japanese films that have been recognized for excellence by Japanese audiences and critics, international film festival audiences and the Japanese Film Academy. TorontoJFF acts as a forum to connect Canadian audiences, Japanese filmmakers, industry professionals and supporters. The festival is a bridge between the Japanese film industry and the Canadian/North American film industry and distribution professionals.

For many films, TorontoJFF is the first step to broader recognition and appreciation by North American and Canadian audiences. The second Toronto Japanese Film Festival will be held at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre between June 13th and 27th, 2013. Programming will again address popular genres such as historical (samurai) jidaigeki, contemporary dramas and comedies, pop culture manga-based action thrillers, art house fare, children’s and anime films. All films will be Canadian or Toronto premieres with the exception of some special screening events.

At TorontoJFF we choose films that reflect the tastes of Japanese audiences, those celebrated by the Japanese Academy Awards, as well as films recommended by the community as those they would like to share with Canadians. In other words, we believe our film project has been “programmed by Japan.”

pingpong_postersAs a part of its presentation of “The World of Taiyo Matsumoto” gallery show, The Japan Foundation, The Beguiling, and The Toronto Comic Arts Festival are pleased to present an intimate screening of PING PONG, a live-action film based on the manga by Taiyo Matsumoto.

Join Curator Christopher Butcher as he gives a brief introduction to the film and the manga that it’s based upon, including how the film may have changed the course of Matsumoto’s career!

“The movie has some of the feel of a good graphic novel and offers a lot of Japanese pop pleasures as well. The images are eye-catching and highly colorful, the pacing is fast, and the story and the characters are simple, grabby and archetypal.” -Michael Wilmington, Chicago Tribune

This is a really fun movie, and I’m going to try to put together a very cool presentation based on the adaptation of the film. I hope you’ll come out to see it (and hey, RSVP to guarantee a space!).
