new_construction_temp (1)The Beguiling welcomes you to celebrate the launch of NEW CONSTRUCTION, the new graphic novel/short story collection by acclaimed cartoonist Sam Alden, from Uncivilized Books. After topping best-of lists around the world for his internet comics and previous release, ‘It Never Happened Again’, Alden returns with a collection of two new comics stories.

Alden will be joined at his book launch by Toronto cartoonist Michael DeForge, with the newly released Lose #7 and Dressing, from Koyama Press. DeForge will interview Alden about his work and career, on stage.

The event is scheduled to take place at The Central, 603 Markham Street, just next to The Beguiling. Our thanks to Uncivilized Books for helping set up this event!

ABOUT:
New Construction collects two newly expanded stories from cartoonist and Adventure Time contributor Sam Alden. In “Household,” a brother and sister deal with divergent memories of their father and grow closer than ever. In “Backyard,” Vegans and anarchists share a house, small dramas and bizarre transformations (featuring a new, never before published ending). Designed as a companion volume for the critically acclaimed It Never Happened Again, New Construction cements Alden’s reputation as one of the best cartoonists of his generation.

headshot_samSam Alden was born in 1988 in Portland, Oregon. He is the recipient of two Ignatz Awards, one for most promising new talent and another for best comic. Sam was an official guest at the BilBoLbul festival in Bologna, Italy. His work has been previously published in Best American Comics 2013, from Houghton-Mifflin. Sam now lives and works as an illustrator and cartoonist in Los Angeles.

TCAF Reveals 2014 Poster by Michael DeForge

The Toronto Comic Arts Festival is proud to present its first poster image for the 2014 show, by Toronto artist Michael DeForge.

DeForge is an integral part of Toronto’s comics scene and community, and has come to international prominence for his rapidly expanding catalogue of work. In 2013 Koyama Press debuted DeForge’s first book collection of work at TCAF 2013, entitled Very Casual, and it has found its way onto many critics’ Best of 2013 lists. In winter 2014 Drawn & Quarterly will publish his graphic novel Ant Colony, and Koyama Press will debut the collection of DeForge’s acclaimed LOSE comic series at TCAF 2014 this May.

Hey Toronto! You get two amazing alt-comix events on the same evening, aren’t you incredibly fortunate to live in this amazing City? Woo hoo!

First up, it’s the previously announced launch for Patrick Kyle’s NEW COMICS #1 and Michael DeForge’s LOSE #5 and VERY CASUAL trade paperback collection. The two artists will be at The Central, signing books and what not, and Chris from The Beguiling will interview them about process and comics creation.

Then! 30 minutes after that ends and 2.5km directly south, it’s PRISON GIRLS DETERRED LAUNCH, the new book from Doug Wright Award winning cartoonist Michael Comeau. $5 cover gets you a copy of the book and admission to the event, which includes a performance by Comeau’s new band New Horizzzons.
