For over two decades, Chester Brown has been one of Canada’s leading cartoonists, known nationally and internationally for such works as Yummy Fur, Ed the Happy Clown, I Never Liked You, and Paying for It. 2013 marks the 10th anniversary of the publication of his innovative and highly influential Louis Riel: A Comic-Strip Biography, published to widespread critical acclaim. For this year’s McCready Lecture, Chester Brown will present an illustrated talk. This will compliment the AGO’s presentation in the Canadian galleries of a selection of the original drawings created for Louis Riel and will launch the new anniversary edition of the book, to be published by Drawn & Quarterly, which will be available for signing following the lecture.

Introducing Chester Brown will be Andrew Hunter (Frederik S. Eaton Curator, Canadian Art, AGO) and Seth, the cartoonist behind the series Pallookaville and Clyde Fans as well as such books as Wimbledon GreenGeorge Sprott and The Great Northern Brotherhood of Canadian Cartoonists. Seth’s comics have appeared in the New York Times Magazine, Best American Comics and McSweeneys Quarterly. His illustrations have appeared in numerous publications including the cover of the New Yorker, the Walrus, and Canadian Notes & Queries. He is also Lemony Snicket’s partner for the new Young Readers series, All the Wrong Questions.

This talk is happening in association with: http://www.ago.net/chester-brown-and-louis-riel

EVENT: Gallery Show: Chester Brown and Louis Riel @ AGO

Chester Brown and Louis Riel
Opens October 12, 2013
@ Max and Madeleine Clarkson Studio and Georgia Ridley Salon

Art Gallery of Ontario

For more than two decades, Chester Brown has been one of Canada’s leading cartoonists. His innovative and influential Louis Riel: A Comic-Strip Biography, which expanded the audience for Canadian cartooning, celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2013. A selection of original drawings from the publication is now on view at the AGO. The works feature the Manitoba politician and Métis leader Louis David Riel fleeing from Fort Garry (now Winnipeg), and his subsequent hanging for treason. Brown’s work combines bold imagery, stark compositions and simple texts to convey a complex Canadian tragedy that remains, for many, controversial and unresolved.

Organized by the Art Gallery of Ontario.

Powerpuff Girls #1… The Beguiling Edition!?

PPG01-coverRE-Beguiling

This week!

To celebrate the release of POWERPUFF GIRLS #1 this week (out Wednesday, September 25th), written and illustrated by Canada’s own Troy Little, we commissioned a very special Canadian cover… The Beguiling edition!

As you can see, it depicts main baddy Mojo Jojo having climbed the CN Tower! (Reminds us of another famous simian…) Luckily, the Powerpuff Girls were hanging out in Mirvish Village (near The Beguiling) and are ready to leap into battle!

If you want to get a copy of your very own (or two or three), the regular price is $5, but we’re offering it for $3.99, the same price as the regular covers. This deal only lasts from Wednesday September 25th through Tuesday October 1st.

Our thanks to creator Troy Little, and the great folks at IDW for helping us put this together!

– The staff of Little Island & The Beguiling

Our condolences to the Mirvish family and friends

We were informed this afternoon that Anne Lazar Mirvish passed away today at the age of 94.

Anne was the wife of the late Ed Mirvish. A scultptor and artist, and a passionate supporter of the arts, she will be greatly missed.

We offer our heartfelt condolences to her family and friends, and the many people that her generous spirit has touched in the city of Toronto.

Sincerely,

Peter Birkemoe & Christopher Butcher
on behalf of the staff of The Beguiling Books & Art

Seth on Martin Vaughn-James’ THE CAGE

Hello!

What follows is an excerpt of Seth’s appreciation of Martin Vaughn-James’ THE CAGE, which appears in Coach House’s new edition being released tonight in Toronto. We hope that you’re already headed down to Revival for the 7:30 start time, but just in case you need a little last minute convincing, I think Seth does a very good job of it.

Our thanks to Coach House for letting us run this excerpt.

DC Villains Month Lenticular Covers – Here’s what we’re gonna do.

Hi Beguiling customers!

We’ve got some bad, overly-complicated news for you here. If you don’t regularly buy or subscribe to DC superhero comics, or know about ‘Villains Month’, you can skip this. Everyone else, please read on.

joker_lg

So! If you haven’t heard, DC is suspending their regular publishing for the month of September, and replacing their books with special “Villain” editions.  Instead of “Batman #24,” we’re getting “Batman #23.1 The Joker.” The Villain editions are $3.99, and come with a special ‘lenticular motion cover’, which honestly looks pretty cool.

Unfortunately, DC didn’t print enough of the lenticular covers to meet demand. In fact, they didn’t print enough so that everyone who, say, ordered “Batman #23,” could get a copy of “Batman #23.1 The Joker.” They really, really screwed this up. As a result, we are only getting between 30% and 90% of our orders on these books.

In an effort to head-off speculators, and to treat you, our regular customers, as well as we can despite a pretty crappy situation, we’ve prepared this statement explaining the situation. What follows are the steps that we’re going to take to try to make everybody happy.

First and foremost:

  • DC has also printed a new first printing of all books, that have standard covers, that will arrive on the same day as the first printings with the lenticular covers. We will be offering these books for roughly 33% off cover price, or $2, each. Limit 2 per person. You will be able to get the stories you want, if you want them, and at a discount because we feel bad about the whole mess.

How we are doling out the lenticular covers:

  1. Priority is being given to existing pullfile customers. Pullfile customers will get their standard orders filled with the lenticular covers. This means that if you pre-ordered Batman #23, you can get the special edition of Batman #23.1.
  2. If there are any copies left after regular pullfiles are taken care of, we will then fill the orders of pullfile customers who submitted special request lists for titles before Friday, August 23rd. This means if you have a pullfile and don’t normally get Batman, but wanted Batman #23.1, we’ll  pull it for you (if we can).
  3. After this, all remaining lenticular cover copies will go to the rack for cover price. Limit one per person. No holds.
  4. We continue to reserve the right to refuse to sell any item to any person, without a given reason. We don’t like to do this, but speculation tends to bring the worst ‘customers’ out of the woodwork, and we do our best to take care of the folks that are here every week.

We’re sorry about all of this. DC has put us in a pretty crappy situation here, and we’re trying to make the best of it. We appreciate your understanding, and your support.

If you have any questions, you can e-mail chris@beguiling.com .

Do you feel the comics you read just aren’t smart enough? Tired of people in tights and zombie apocalypses? Do we have the books for you! On Friday, September 13, Coach House Books and The Beguiling invite you to one of the most most rarefied of comics events to hit Toronto. These are comics so smart, they should come with Cliff’s Notes

This fall, Coach House Books launches two new books: In Love with Art and The Cage. Jeet Heer’s book In Love with Art: Françoise Mouly’s Adventures in Comics with Art Spiegelman looks at the woman who’s gone (until now) unappreciated as an architect of the modern comics revolution. Françoise Mouly, co-editor of RAW, art director of The New Yorker and wife of Art Spiegelman has been quietly changing comics art since the 1980s, and Heer’s new book looks at her triumphs and long relationship with the creator of Maus and In the Shadow of No Towers. The Cage by the late Martin Vaughn-James is a reprint of a lost cult classic of Canadian graphic novels. First published in 1975, the enigmatic comic returns to print after decades, with a new introduction (and appreciation) by Seth.

On September 13, author Jeet Heer will conduct an on-stage conversation with comic book force of nature Françoise Mouly about her decades-long relationship with Art Spiegelman, their work with RAW and Mouly’s overhaul of The New Yorker and creation of TOON Books. Heer will also speak with comics’ writer Sean Rogers (The Walrus, Globe and Mail) about the legacy of The Cage. And this will all be followed by a discussion of the changing face of comics as a more intellectual undertaking. Signings by Heer and Mouly will follow the on-stage discussion.

R.I.P. Kim Thompson, 1956-2013

new-york-mon-amour-cover-tardi-fantagraphics

I think it’s safe to say that The Beguiling might not exist without many of the comics that Kim Thompson had a hand in over the past 25 years. All of us here are saddened by his passing.

Many folks have done wonderful write-ups of just why he was so important to this medium, and Tom Spurgeon has been collecting them here. We encourage you to read them, to see the lives he touched and the greatness he brought to the medium.

Our condolences to our friends at Fantagraphics, to Kim Thompson’s friends, and his family.
