The Beguiling is teaming up with the fierce folks at Green Candy Press to present Maurice Vellekoop’s PIN-UPS! It’s a cross between his most recent collection, “A Nut At The Opera,” and his most infamous collection, “ABC: A Homoerotic Primer,” featuring tributes to hundreds of years of gay imagery from film to fashion to fantasy, all rendered in Maurice’s trademark style.

The event will feature a gallery show, presentation from the book, and some fantastic music too. If you’ve ever thought about coming out to one of our events, this one guarantees a fabulous time.

In advance of Lynda Barry’s upcoming presentations at The International Festival of Authors, she will be giving one of her fantastic classes on writing and creativity. It runs two days, Thursday and Friday the 23rd and 24th of October, for 6 hours per day, and will cost $300.

OK! This is the writing class Lynda Barry teaches! It is open to ALL PEOPLE! It is called– WRITING THE UNTHINKABLE! But first! Please note! IMPORTANT! This class is for students 18 years old and UP! No one under 18 allowed! Do you wish you could write? Do you wish you had a better memory? Do you want to make stories but are too confused about how to even start? DO YOU WANT A SEAT IN THE TWO-DAY WRITING CLASS TAUGHT BY LYNDA BARRY? THIS IS AN INTENSIVE WRITING CLASS! It’s not a social situation at all! Actually, you can be completely anonymous in this class! The Beguiling is proud to welcome Australia’s Shaun Tan to Toronto, on tour for his new book Tales from Outer Suburbia. Despite being an accomplished and award-winning illustrator, Tan first came to the attention of graphic novel fans around the world for his epic, wordless graphic novel The Arrival.

Tales from Outer Suburbia is a fascinating hybrid storybook and graphic novel, showcasing Tan’s gorgeous art through prose, comics, and gorgeous full-page illustrations. A collection of short stories to be enjoyed by readers from 6 to 60, Tales from Outer Suburbia is exactly the sort of book that could become anyone’s favourite.

With The Arrival receiving incredible international acclaim, including being picked as The Comic Journal’s best graphic novel of 2007, we’re sure that Tan’s visit to Toronto is eagerly anticipated.

I’ve been really looking forward to reading this one. It’s a thoughtful and mature slice of life story that’s worth a look even for non-manga readers. This English edition combines the two Japanese tankoubon into one slightly over-sized french fold softcover and includes the original color opening pages of both chapters.

“Meiko Inoue is a recent college grad working as an office lady in a job she hates. Her boyfriend Shigeo is permanently crashing at her apartment because his job as a freelance illustrator doesn’t pay enough for rent. And her parents in the country keep sending her boxes of veggies that just rot in her fridge. Straddling the line between her years as a student and the rest of her life, Meiko struggles with the feeling that she’s just not cut out to be a part of the real world.”
