This month Comics Industry Night is proud to celebrate the launch of two great books featuring talented Canadian comic artists.

NEGATIVE BURN #17 features the short graphic novella “Growing Up With Comics” by Ron Kasman and R.G. Taylor. It tells the story of the comic book culture in Toronto in the 1950s, 60s and 70s then on into the present day. Touching on many Toronto comics landmarks, the story is like a walk down memory lane for long-time comics fans and an introduction to Toronto’s rich comics history for newcomers to the medium.

THE COMIC EYE is a new book-length anthology of comics… about comics! Published and Edited by Hamilton’s Mark Innes, the book features 50 autobiographical strips by 50 different creators, running the gamut from Fred Hembeck and Matt Feazel to Bernie Mierault and Nick Craine (and Mssrs. Kasman and Taylor make an appearance as well).

Many of the creators will be in attendance including Kasman, Taylor, and Innes, and the evening will include presentations from both works. It should be an entertaining evening! Hope to see you there!

At the launch of Skim, writer MARIKO TAMAKI and illustrator JILLIAN TAMAKI will discuss the evolution of their widely celebrated book with novelist JESSICA WESTHEAD and show slides chronicling the process. Also, EMILY POHL-WEARY will salute the Tamaki’s remarkable accomplishment — A This Is Not A Reading Series event presented by Pages Books & Magazines, Groundwood Books and EYE WEEKLY.

The Beguiling will be open right through Easter weekend, though we will be observing holiday hours on Friday and Monday.

Thursday March 20: 11am – 7pm
Friday March 21: 12pm – 6pm
Saturday March 22: 11am – 7pm
Sunday March 23: 12pm – 6pm
Monday March 24: 12pm – 6pm

This will not affect New Comics Day on Wednesday.

MOVIE: Persepolis playing now at the Bloor

If you weren’t one of the folks lucky enough to score free tickets to a screening of Persepolis last month, then we’ve got good news for you! The Bloor Cinema is going to be screening Persepolis, the animated film adaptation of Marjane Satarapi’s award-winning graphic novel starting tomorrow. This week sees the release of the new Justice League: The New Frontier DVD, based on the comics by Canadian author Darwyn Cooke, as well as a new comic featuring tales from the New Frontier universe by Cooke, David Bullock, and Toronto’s J. Bone and Mike Cho. Cool eh?

We were trying really hard to put together a signing featuring Darwyn Cooke and the crew, and a screening of the film… we even hinted pretty strongly at it over the past few months. The Beguiling is happy to announce that Michel Rabagliati, author of the Paul series of graphic novels including the newly-released Paul Goes Fishing will be participating in a moderated Q&A and book signing session on Saturday, March 5th at 5pm, at The Lillian H. Smith Library in Toronto.

Rabagliati will be interviewed on stage by The Beguiling’s Peter Birkemoe, on his life and art as well as his new graphic novel. Admission to the event is completely free.
