The Beguiling is a proud sponsor of BROTHERS AND ARMS, a brand new Fringe Festival play by Steven Jackson. Can I just say that it’s so nice to see a comic-related play or event that isn’t all about superheroes? Well I am. Anyhow, Steven is a customer of ours and he’s put together an interesting Fringe play that’s already got a lot of buzz–it’s about two brothers during WWII, one on the front lines and one illustrating comic books about the same subject, and the gulf between their respective realities. We’re looking forward to it! Hopefully you will too.

Sammy Harkham’s Poor Sailor

There’s a lovely little graphic novella called POOR SAILOR, by Kramers Ergot Editor Sammy Harkham that you probably should’ve seen by now. It was originally printed in a volume of Kramers, and then produced as a very handsome mini-comic, before getting a very handsome hardcover release. It’s quite good.
Well just recently, Poor Sailor appeared in a fourth format–as a webcomic! The entire story has just finished being serialized online at the website What Things Do, a treasure trove of fantastic art comix. If you’ve never read it, I humbly recommend checking it out, it’s great:
Poor Sailor @ What Things Do: http://whatthingsdo.com/comic/poor-sailor-3/
As a reminder to our customers, we probably have Poor Sailor in stock in one of its formats at any given time, including in some of the rare, out-of-print volumes of Kramers Ergot that we just happen to still have stock on. For availability you can ask Peter on the main floor, or email mail@beguiling.com.
Also as a reminder, The Beguiling proudly represents the original art sales of Mr. Sammy Harkham, including all of the remaining original art from Poor Sailor. You can see all of Sammy’s originals that are available for sale at http://www.beguiling.com/artproductlist.asp?ID=22. Shown above is a panel from Page 5, which runs about $170.

The Beguiling Recommends:

MAR101136 MOVING PICTURES GN 14.95
This little graphic novella from Kathryn & Stuart Immonen actually debuted back at TCAF last month, but is now available in better stores everywhere. I’ve just finished it and it’s quite good, and a little unexpected. A short, sharp, literary piece about World War II and the lengths to which two people bound by obligation will go.
FEB100245 NEIL YOUNGS GREENDALE HC (MR) 19.99
The other big Canadian graphic novel of the week, though this one more nominally so… NEIL YOUNG’S GREENDALE has been in the works since the album itself, an adaptation, expansion, and exploration of Young’s rock-opera. Not for nothing, but the reason I’m coming to this work is definitely Cliff Chiang’s art. Chiang is truly incredible (you may remember him from Human Target) and I think this is his longest single work to date. Good stuff.
APR100997 STARDROP GN VOL 01 (C: 0-1-2) 9.95
New original-ish graphic novel from THIEVES AND KINGS creator Mark Oakley, collected short strips and clips that appeared online and gathered together into a book.
APR101063 HOW I MADE IT TO EIGHTEEN GN (MR) 16.99
This one has some buzz behind it, in a sort of “Fun Home” kind of a way. Memoir of trouble youth, mainstream publishing house, I’m kinda curious to see what it looks like as I’ve seen hide-nor-hair of it so far.
APR100860 POWER OUT GN 9.95
Xeric-grant winning independent comic that’s advertising alllllll over the internet. Curious for that alone.
NOV090041 BLACKSAD HC VOL 01 (C: 0-1-2) 29.99
Finally, the only furry comic that’s generally socially acceptable to own! Kidding, kidding, the whole thing is a gorgeous and well-liked crime noir series that’s been incredibly difficult to find… until now!
