Now In Stock: The Works of Lucy Knisley!

Just a brief reminder that we’ve got nearly the complete works of Lucy Knisley, an outstanding young cartoonist, currently available at The Beguiling. From her wonderful debut graphic novel FRENCH MILK to her most recent comics collections MAKE YOURSELF HAPPY, RADIATOR DAYS, the full-colour PRETTY LITTLE BOOK and the collaboration with comicker Erica Moen, DRAWN TO YOU, we’ve got it. 🙂

I love Lucy’s work; it’s poignant and insightful, mixing a good deal of humour in with autobiography and observation, and it’s affecting throughout. The books also cover a wide range of her personal and artistic development, and in such a short time too. Even her earliest work impresses, and by the third book I’d be surprised if she wasn’t one of your favourite cartoonists, because she’s certainly one of mine.

All books located on the first floor.

La Vilane Lulu strikes at The Beguiling!

Originally published in 1960, fashion legend Yves Saint Laurent’s “La Vilane Lulu” created quite the uproar in fashion circles, as the collection of comic strips held an unkind mirror up to the industry. Long out-of-print, the early graphic album has made a welcome return thanks to the fine folks at Editions de La Martineiere and is now in stock at The Beguiling for just $35.95.

The new edition is creating something of a stir as well, with initial buzz on Twitter last week preceding a full story in The Toronto Star today! Here’s to hoping that positive word of mouth and a fabulous buzz inspires some smart publisher to pick up the similarly long-out-of-print Adventures of Sandee The Supermodel by Isaac Mizrahi from long, long ago…
Oh! And for you international customers (or if you just hate coming downtown…), we’re also offering this book through our online bookstore.

ANNOUNCE: Koyama Press’ Wowee Zonk 3 & Baba Yaga and the Wolf: Double Book Launch!

Koyama Press and The Beguiling present
Wowee Zonk’s “Wowee Zonk 3”
Tin Can Forest’s “Baba Yaga and the Wolf”
BOOK LAUNCH Thursday OCT 7th 7pm-10pm
The Central 603 Markham St. Toronto

FREE

The Beguiling are teaming up with the fine folks at Koyama Press to hold a double-book launch for two of their fantastic fall releases!

WOWEE ZONK 3 is the third great comics and art anthology from Toronto’s Wowee Zonk collective. It features new comics from WZ mainstays Chris Kuzma, Ginette Lapalme, and Patrick Kyle, as well as an awesome array of their friends including Zach Worton, Jan Avendano, Chris Simonen, Dan Rocca, Andrei Georgescu, Michael DeForge, and Selena Wong! Another amazing volume of the awesome comics series!

Joining the Wowee Zonk crew will be the esteemed TIN CAN FOREST, better known as Pat Shewchuk and Marek Colek. In their new graphic novella Baba Yaga and the Wolf, Marek Colek and Pat Shewchuk, drawing inspiration from early Russian animated films, Slavic mythology, and symbols and pictography associated with the many iterations of the Baba Yaga mythos, have given new breath to an age-old cautionary tale of being careful to voice that which one most desires in a world where every leaf on every branch on every tree might be aware of such wants and the darkness that exists at their roots.

In addition to signings and presentations at the launch, the combined crew is hoping to put together an installation of art and materials that went into the creation of these books… we’ll confirm that a little later though.

So come on out and enjoy! It’s gonna be an awesome evening filled with good times.

Presented by The Beguiling and Koyama Press, with special thanks to The Central

NOW IN STOCK: Paul Pope’s THB: Comics from Mars #2

Sometimes we have lots of grand announcements and warning and promotion for new projects by our favourite cartoonists… and sometimes they just drop out of the sky like mana from heaven. Such is the case with the newest release from our good friend Paul Pope, who announced that THB: Comics From Mars #2 would debut at a convention a few weeks back… a day before the convention.

We shouldn’t have been too surprised I guess, he did the same thing with THB: Comics From Mars #1, and that was at or around TCAF… But still, caught by surprise we were. Luckily, the good folks at AdHouse hooked us up with copies of the new comic to sell, and they’re now in stock and ready for you to pick up. It’s a really fun issue too, a nice “Canadian” connection… heh. Anyway, it’s $5, available on both floors.

NOW AVAILABLE: Original Art by Rafael Albuquerque from American Vampire

The Beguiling is proud to announce that we are now selling original art by Rafael Albuquerque, artist on the acclaimed new DC/Vertigo series American Vampire, created by the legendary Stephen King. The Beguiling has secured more than 20 pages of original artwork from the series for sale, including the iconic cover to the first issue and the first hardcover graphic novel. This work can be found for sale in The Beguiling’s Original Art Store, at http://www.beguiling.com/artstore1a.asp.

Rafael Albuquerque is an amazing young artist, and American Vampire is really the first series to fully showcase his full range and talent. With the book illustrated in two unique styles–a straight pen and ink style for the “present day” stories and a lush grey wash for a story set in the old west. The series is an original creation by Master of Horror and bestselling novelist Stephen King, and his first original work in the medium of comics. King collaborates with Albuquerque and writer Scott Snyder to bring the stories of vampiric history–in the roaring twenties and the old west–to life.
The Beguiling proudly represents the original art sales for dozens of critically acclaimed comics artists including Paul Pope, Gabriel Ba & Fabio Moon, Kagan McLeod, Jeffrey Brown, Sammy Harkham, Anders Nilsen, Michel Rabagliati, and many more. FIRE & WATER: Bill Everett Book Launch & Discussion with Blake Bell and Wendy Everett

FIRE AND WATER: Bill Everett, the Sub-Mariner & the Birth of Marvel Comics
Book Launch and Discussion with Author Blake Bell
Saturday, September 25th, 4:30pm-6pm
Innis College Town Hall, 2 Sussex Avenue (St. George south of Bloor)
FREE
For a Preview of this book, click this link: http://beguiling.com/firewater-8p-pre.pdf
UPDATE: We’re pleased to announce that Wendy Everett, the daughter of Bill Everett, will now be attending this book launch and discussion, and will be participating in the discussion of her father’s work. We couldn’t be more excited, and we’d like to thank Ms. Everett for participating!
In 1939, decades before it would become the powerhouse behind such famous super-heroes as Spider-Man, The X-Men, and Iron Man, Marvel Comics launched its comics line with a four-color magazine starring a daring new antihero: The Sub-Mariner, created by the great Bill Everett.
The Sub-Mariner alone, and his status as the original Marvel (anti-)hero, would have insured any cartoonist’s place in comics history. But Everett was a master of many kinds of comics: romance, crime, humor, and the often brutal horror comics genre (before it was defanged by the Comics Code Authority in the 1950s), for which he produced work of such stylish and horrific beauty that he ranks with the artists who kept the legendary EC comics line awash in blood and guts.
Written by Blake Bell (the author of the best-selling critical biography of Steve Ditko, Strange and Stranger) and compiled with the aid and assistance of Everett’s family, friends, and cartoonist peers, Fire and Water: Bill Everett, the Sub-Mariner & the Birth of Marvel Comics is an intimate biography of a troubled man; an eye-popping collection of Everett’s comics, sketchbook drawings, and illustration art (including spectacular samples from his greatest published work as well as never-before-seen private drawings); and an in-depth look at his involvement in the birth of the company that would revolutionize pop culture forever: Marvel Comics!
In celebration of this book, The Beguiling will be welcoming author Blake Bell to Toronto to discuss this new book, and the life and career of Bill Everett. Special guests may also be on hand to help us celebrate this release, keep watching this space for details…!
FIRE & WATER: Bill Everett, The Sub-Mariner, and the Birth of Marvel Comics will be available for sale at this event, alongside other classic Marvel Comics collections and previous books by Blake Bell.
