Imiri Sakabashira’s Heso-No-O Kaidou – Great Gifts at The Beguiling

The very select amongst you may remember (and be a fan of) Imri Sakabashira’s THE BOX MAN, released last year from the fine folks at Drawn and Quarterly. Well, in addition to his underground manga career, Sakabashira is also a noted painter and fine artist, and on my last trip to Japan I was able to pick up a bunch of copies of a gallery catalogue of his painting work, published by the alt-culture retailer TACO che. 60 pages, colour, A5 Size, $19.95, and it’s available on both floors.

This is one of those super-cool items that we get here at The Beguiling that we have for a little while and people think “Oh, I’ll get that next time,” and then it is gone, but more importantly since it is published by a Japanese micro-publisher and we picked them up in person in Japan, it will eventually be gone forever. These are probably the only copies of these in Canada, that sorta thing. 🙂

The store is full of cool stuff like this, by the by, and we’ll be doing our best to highlight these fine items over the next few weeks. Keep checking the blog!

Anders Nilsen’s BIG QUESTIONS #15 and Michael DeForge’s SPOTTING DEER

Anders Nilsen’s BIG QUESTIONS #15 has just arrived in-store, wrapping up the exceptionally long-running serialized graphic novel. I’ve been following it since about issue #6 and it’s a phenomenal, beautiful work, and I’m really looking forward to seeing how it all wraps up. Big Questions #15 is published by the lovely Drawn & Quarterly, and is available on the main floor.

Toronto Comics wunderkind Michael DeForge also has a brand new comic book out, SPOTTING DEER, from the fine folks at Koyama Press. The previews of this one set the internet on fire last week, so now that the book is available in store we hope you’ll all come by and pick up a copy, it’s even prettier than it looks here, and a massive 10″ x 10″. $5.00, both floors.

Shipping December 1st, 2010

SCOTT. THOMPSON.

The following comics and graphic novels are scheduled to ship The Beguiling Books & Art on Wednesday, December 1st, 2010. All Prices listed in U.S. Funds. Variant prices are generally accurate to what we will be charging in store, but all disputes between prices will defer to the stickered, in-store price.

Please note: We got in lots of new Viz manga as well this week. The complete list is at the bottom of this message.

Click here for the complete list: http://beguiling.com/101201shipping.txt

The Beguiling Recommends:

SEP100406 Danny Husk: The Hollow Planet Gn 19.99
SCOTT. THOMPSON. Yes, that Scott Thompson, from Kids in the Hall. He’s written his first graphic novel, and it features his character Danny Husk. It’s hilarious, and I’m only a few pages in. Seriously, don’t miss it.

MAY100481 King City #12 2.99 – The last issue of the excellent euro/manga/U.S. comics hybrid series, and one of our favourites of the past few years.

OCT100442 Marineman #1 3.99 – A striking new undersea adventure hero in an appealing art style from Image.

DEC090037 Achewood HC Vol 03 Home For Scared People 16.99 – Yes, that is–in fact–a December 09 code. But ACHEWOOD is so awesome that it’s utterly worth the wait.

SEP100285 Planetary TP Book 04 Spacetime Archaeology 17.99 – The Complete series, now available in trade paperback.

AUG101178 Tezuka Ayako GN 26.95 – Any other week and this would be the pick of the week, but the idea of Scott Thompson writing a KITH-related graphic novel kind of blew my mind a little bit, so… But as for this one, it’s a generational saga of abuse, neglect, and declining fortunes following World War II. It’s a massive 700page hardcover, one of Tezuka’s most mature works, and by all accounts a great, difficult read. Don’t miss it.

New Viz Manga in Stock:
Butterflies, Flowers v5
Cactus’ Secret v4
Honey Hunt v6
Hoshing Engi v21
Kamisama Kiss v1
Library Wars v3
Pokemon Adventures v10
ouran Highschool Host Club v15
Rasetsu v7
Rosario+Vampire Season 2 v3
Seiho Boys Highschool v3
Skip Beat v22
Slam Dunk v13
Toriko v3
Ultimo v3
Vampire Knight v11

2010 Holiday Shipping Schedule

We’ve been pretty fortunate here in Canada to not experience almost any delays this year in Diamond’s regular Wednesday shipments, but our luck couldn’t hold out forever and it looks like the one-two punch of Christmas and New Years is going to hit Canada with a shipping delay. Here’s Diamond’s shipping schedule for Canada for the rest of the year:

Wednesday December 1st
Wednesday December 8th
Wednesday December 15th
Wednesday December 22nd
Thursday December 30th
Wednesday January 5th, 2011

There will be a bunch of delays for U.S. and other customers in and around this period, but until we hear otherwise these are the in-store dates. Reorders placed through Diamond will also likely be a mess until about January. As it is, we’re seeing 3-4 week wait times on items listed as “in-stock”.

Also of note? We get tons and tons of new product through distributors other than Diamond, arriving all through the week. We’ll do our best to make note of new arrivals here on the blog.

Thanks,

– Chris @ The Beguiling

THIS SUNDAY: Dave Cooper Interviewed by Robin McConnell – INKSTUDS X BENT

INKSTUDS X BENT
Robin McConnell Interviews Dave Cooper
Sunday, November 28th, 3pm-6pm
@ The Central, 603 Markham Street
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=122348711160147
FREE

Presented by The Beguiling, Conundrum Press, and Fantagraphics Books

Toronto! Get ready for a fantastic comics event as Robin McConnell, host of the INKSTUDS podcast and author of the new book of the same name, will interview Canada’s own Dave Cooper, who has recently released his own new artbook BENT! Following the interview will be a moderated Q&A with the audience, and a signing.

The event is going down on Sunday, November 28th, from 3pm-6pm next door to The Beguiling at The Central. Both the INKSTUDS book and Cooper’s BENT (as well as other fine graphic novels) will be available for sale.

This is pretty amazing as the INKSTUDS book is great, and anyone with a deeper interest in comics will get a lot out of it. And Dave Cooper hasn’t been at a comics-related event in Toronto for almost 10 years, at this point, and I’m totally psyched that he’s travelling down from Ottawa. This is going to be really cool, we hope you can make it out.

UPDATE: The Beguiling is proud to welcome Brian Chippendale (NINJA, MAGGOTS) and C.F. (POWR MASTRS) to Toronto, on tour in support their brand-new books! Chippendale is presenting the new graphic novel IF ‘N’ OOF, and C.F. will have the third highly-anticipated volume of the POWR MASTRS series! The duo will each give a presentation in support of their new works, and a signing session will follow.

This event will now take place at RESISTOR GALLERY, at 284 College near Spadina, 2nd floor, from 6:30pm-7:30pm. Both books will be available at the event, and copies of work by both artists are currently available at The Beguiling.

It will be followed in the same space by the gallery opening for KRAMPUSNACHT, an amazing art-show of Krampus-themed work by top Canadian illustrators, comics creators, and artists, and curated by Tin Can Forest and Steve Wilson. This is a completely separate event however, and we strongly encourage guests to RSVP for that event at http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=161517740552315.

ABOUT IF ‘N’ OOF:
Three years in the making, If ‘n Oof is Brian Chippendale’s most ambitious, yet accessible, work to date. If ‘n’ Oof focuses on the misadventures of the mismatched eponymous duo Chippendale’s very own Laurel and Hardy. Chippendale allows the two to explore his landscapes and alien beings. Comedy, horror, and out-and-out adventure in a story-driven, manga-style adventure, replete with the frenetic linework and concise, witty dialogue for which he has become known.

Brian Chippendale, who also performs in Lightning Bolt and Black Pus lives and works in Providence, Rhode Island. His previous graphic novels include Maggots (2007) and Ninja (2006).

IF ‘N’ OOF
800 Pages, SC, US$30
Published by PictureBox Inc.

ABOUT POWR MASTRS 3:
This latest installment continues C.F.’s Dune-like science fiction/fantasy epic featuring a misguided scientist and the race of beings he has created, who inhabit a surreal world called New China. The narrative follows the ever-shifting power relations of these mystical warriors who transform their physical and psychological identities each time the tide of power turns.

Powr Mastrs Vol. 2 hit over a dozen “top-ten graphic novels of 2008” lists, both volumes 1 and 2 have been described by Vice Magazine as “dark doors into the stunningly fantastic,” and The Village Voice has noted that “the homemade arcane dominates in C.F.’s sexy danger world.” This third installment is no exception: it overflows with graphic innovation, from the intricately designed costumes each character wears to the exactingly drawn architectural detail, all rendered in C.F.’s distinctive pencil line. In this volume, C.F. firmly takes the reins both as a visual and comics artist, making a book as essential to the practice of drawing as to the graphic novel.

C.F., a contributor to Kramers Ergot, among other books, also performs under the monikers Kites and Daily Life. He lives in Providence, RI.
