The event, hosted by Selena the Stripper, will include a multimedia reading of the book, accompanied by a soundtrack, a voice actor, and at least one puppet. Audience members will be encouraged to participate via chat and social media, and be entered to win a “party favour” bag containing some of Alwani’s favourite things.

You can register for the zoom event here: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/toronto-lit-up-sami-alwani-tickets-148635724453

Order your copy from our webstore here!

Note: although this event is open to all ages, attendees should be aware that The Pleasure of the Text contains mature content.

This event is sponsored by Toronto Lit Up.

About The Pleasure of the Text

In The Pleasure of the Text, Sami Alwani weaves together themes of art induced dissociation, queer intergenerational polyamory, racial capitalism and esoteric mystical experiences into 20 slice of life comic stories that are equal parts comedy and tragedy.

These stories question society and individual identity. A talking baby philosophizes away his own emotions. A half-man, half-dog cartoonist’s spirit burns too bright when he alienates the entire alternative comics industry, drunk on his own power. A friendly ghost survives COVID quarantine with the help of CBD pot cookies and essential oil diffusers.

There’s something for everyone in this cheerful volume collecting all of award-winning Alwani’s previous work to date (Vice, Now) with plenty of never-before-seen material.

To Know You’re Alive:

Graphic shorts filled with horror, humour, and the absurd.

Award-winning Canadian cartoonist Dakota McFadzean returns with a brilliantly dark collection that offers a glimpse into the cracks between childhood imagination and the disappointing harshness of adulthood. Populated by cruel bullies, exhausted parents, and relentless cartoon mascots, the world of To Know You’re Alive renders the familiar into something that is alien and absurd. The characters in these stories long to uncover something uncanny in shadowy attics and beneath masks, only to discover that sometimes it’s worse to find nothing at all.

About Fictional Father:

A RECOVERING ALCOHOLIC LIVES IN THE SHADOW OF A WORLD FAMOUS COMIC STRIP AND ITS TYRANNICAL CREATOR

Caleb is a middle-aged painter with a non-starter career and a checkered past. He also happens to be the only child of one of the world’s most famous cartoonists, Jimmi Wyatt. Known for the internationally beloved father and son comic Sonny Side Up, Jimmi made millions drawing saccharine family stories while neglecting his own son.

Now sober, Caleb is haunted by his wasted past and struggling to take responsibility for his present before it’s too late. His always patient boyfriend, James, is reaching the end of his rope. When Caleb gets the chance to step out from his father’s shadow and shape the most public aspect of the family business, he makes every bad decision and watches his life fall apart. Is it too late to repair the harm? Are we forever doomed to make the same mistakes our parents did?

MAR 30: HIROMI GOTO + ANN XU “SHADOW LIFE” VIRTUAL LAUNCH

Tuesday March 30th at 8PM EST we are very excited to celebrate the launch of award-winning Canadian writer and poet Hiromi Goto’s Shadow Life, a graphic novel illustrated by Ann Xu. The event will be broadcast virtually over Crowdcast.

The book follows Kumiko, a tenacious 76-year-old woman who refuses to while away her remaining years in an old folks’ home and submit to death – even as death comes knocking. It’s a brilliant, heart-rending, beautiful piece that defies stereotypes about age, gender, sexuality, and ethnicity, and celebrates the importance of families both born and chosen.

This book is shaping up to be a favorite of the year! Hiromi Goto and Ann Xu will be present for a reading and discussion moderated by Loyalty Bookshop’s Christine Bollow.
