NOW AVAILABLE: Original Art by Rafael Albuquerque from American Vampire

The Beguiling is proud to announce that we are now selling original art by Rafael Albuquerque, artist on the acclaimed new DC/Vertigo series American Vampire, created by the legendary Stephen King. The Beguiling has secured more than 20 pages of original artwork from the series for sale, including the iconic cover to the first issue and the first hardcover graphic novel. This work can be found for sale in The Beguiling’s Original Art Store, at http://www.beguiling.com/artstore1a.asp.

Rafael Albuquerque is an amazing young artist, and American Vampire is really the first series to fully showcase his full range and talent. With the book illustrated in two unique styles–a straight pen and ink style for the “present day” stories and a lush grey wash for a story set in the old west. The series is an original creation by Master of Horror and bestselling novelist Stephen King, and his first original work in the medium of comics. King collaborates with Albuquerque and writer Scott Snyder to bring the stories of vampiric history–in the roaring twenties and the old west–to life.
The Beguiling proudly represents the original art sales for dozens of critically acclaimed comics artists including Paul Pope, Gabriel Ba & Fabio Moon, Kagan McLeod, Jeffrey Brown, Sammy Harkham, Anders Nilsen, Michel Rabagliati, and many more. Visit us online at http://www.beguiling.com/artstore1a.asp to see the full selection of original artwork, posters, and prints available for sale.

Sale of Rare Seth Artwork at SDCC from The Beguiling!

The Beguiling is pleased to announce that for the first time, we will be selling Original Artwork from Canadian Comics Icon Seth’s graphic novel classic IT’S A GOOD LIFE IF YOU DON’T WEAKEN, as part of our original art display and sales at The Drawn & Quarterly Booth (#1529) at the 2010 San Diego Comic Con.

For years, graphic novel fans have clamoured after comic pages from Seth, creator of the classic Palooka-ville series and numerous graphic novels including Wimbledon Green, George Sprott, and Clyde Fans, and until this year Seth had only made available original art from his prodigious illustration career for sale. But this is the first time that pages from his first graphic novel have been made available for sale, and make no mistake they will sell quickly (We had 10 pages for sale and one sold as we were unboxing the art!) So we will be bringing 9 pages from It’s A Good Life… to San Diego, alongside a handful of brand new illustrations by Seth. It’s a pretty amazing opportunity!
As always, The Beguiling will have a small display set up in the beautiful Drawn & Quarterly Booth, #1529–the same location they’ve been for nearly 20 years! And if Original Art is too rich for your blood, Seth’s PALOOKA-VILLE #20 will also be debuting at the show. The first in the new hardcover format of 150 pages or so, it contains a complete graphic novella. For more on D&Q’s plans at San Diego, check out their blog.
This exclusive Seth art is great news for art fans, and it’s just the tip-of-the-iceberg for original art fans coming to San Diego! The Beguiling will also be featuring art from all of its artstore clients (as seen at http://www.beguiling.com/artstore1a.asp)! Of special note, we’ll have brand new work on hand from Sammy Harkham, Jeffrey Brown, Jason Lutes, and (God-Willing) Paul Pope.
We _are_ accepting special requests for art from our website at http://www.beguiling.com/artstore1a.asp. If you see a piece of art on our site that you’d like us to bring to San Diego for you, email us at mail@beguiling.com! You can save yourself some shipping (and insurance) on original art!
Oh, and we’re going to try to bring some TCAF Posters and other prints too.
All the best,
– Chris @ The Beguiling

NEW IN THE ARTSTORE: BA, O’MALLEY, MOON

Hey Original Art lovers! We’re pleased to announce that following a fruitful convention season, we’ve got a bunch of brand new art in The Beguiling Art Store from some of our favourite creators!

For all of you fans of THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY, Gabriel Ba has provided us with a plethora of pages from THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY and THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY: DALLAS. These two series are written by “My Chemical Romance” frontman Gerard Way, and both will be available in trade paperback soon.

SUGARSHOCK is Fabio Moon‘s collaboration with Buffy creator Joss Whedon, and in addition to its appearances in MySpace Dark Horse Presents, SUGARSHOCK is getting it’s own one-shot this fall! Fabio has provided us with several new pages from the series, as well as the cover art for the one-shot!

And it’s been a long-time coming, but Bryan Lee O’Malley has given us a bunch of pages from his smash-hit series SCOTT PILGRIM, including two of the double-page spreads set at Toronto Reference Library! Plus, a very rare piece of art from the launch party for Scott Pilgrim V1.

We’re also working with a number of other artists including Jeffrey Brown, Sammy Harkham, and Ron Rege Jr. to offer brand new art by them as well. Keep an eye on the blog (and on their artstore pages) for updates!

Thanks,

The Beguiling: Original Comics Art & Illustration Sales
at The San Diego Comic-Con, July 23-26
Drawn & Quarterly Booth, #1529

The Beguiling will once again be representing the original comics art and illustration sales of more than 3 dozen cartoonists at The San Diego Comic-Con this week, July 23-26 (we will not be at Preview night). The Beguiling’s Peter Birkemoe will be on hand and exhibiting in a small corner of booth #1529, owned by venerable Canadian publisher Drawn + Quarterly.

The Beguiling represents original art by some of alternative comics’ greatest names at their online artstore, http://www.beguiling.com/artstore1a.asp, including D+Q cartoonists Seth, Jason Lutes, and Sammy Harkham, all of whom will be signing at the D+Q booth during Comic-Con. The Beguiling will be sure to have a bunch of art by these fine cartoonists on hand at the show.

Other highlights of this year’s mix of comics art and illustration include:

– Dozens of all-new, never-before offered pages by artist Farel Dalrymple from OMEGA THE UNKNOWN (with Jonathan Lethem), including pages from issues 9 and 10, covers, and process work! Also on hand will be illustrations and the original art for his story in MEATHAUS: SOS.

– For the first time ever, we will be selling the original artwork from the popular U.S. tv series QUEER AS FOLK, by Toronto artist and former-Beguiling-owner Sean Scoffield! These pages feature the character CAPTAIN ASTRO created for the show, with one painting and one pen-and-ink illustration, as well as other work from Scoffield’s recent career at Marvel Comics.

– Recent art from Norwegian cartoonist Jason (LOW MOON), Kevin Huizenga (CURSES), Maurice Vellekoop (PIN-UPS), Anders Nilsen (DOGS & WATER), Jeff Lemire (ESSEX COUNTY), Becky Cloonan (AMERICAN VIRGIN) and more!

– If all goes according to plan, we will have some last-minute new artwork on-hand from Paul Pope, creator of THB, BATMAN YEAR 100, and WEDNESDAY COMICS. According to Paul, his WEDNESDAY COMICS original art are some of his largest pieces EVER, and this will be the first time that they will be available for sale!

– If you weren’t able to make it to this year’s Toronto Comic Art Festival, then you missed one of the most unique and exclusive releases of the year, Francois Ayroles’ GREAT MOMENTS FROM THE HISTORY OF COMICS. This hilarious comix chapbook sends up all of the greatest creators in comics from around the world, and is an indispensible item for any artcomix fan. GREAT MOMENTS FROM THE HISTORY OF COMICS will be available exclusively at the D&Q booth.

Hate paying for shipping? If you will be at the San Diego Comic-Con and are interested in purchasing a specific piece of art from our website, we will happily bring it to the show for you. If you’d like us to bring a specific piece from our website to take a look at, please contact us at mail@beguiling.com. Unfortunately we are not “holding” art for people unless they have purchased it outright, but we will try to accommodate all requests. Contact mail@beguiling.com for further details.

Also, a number of the artists that we represent will be signing and exhibiting at San Diego this year. Here’s a quick guide to everyone (we think) that will be in San Diego:

Gabriel Ba, Becky Cloonan, Fabio Moon – #1322
Jeffrey Brown, Jeff Lemire – Top Shelf, #1721
Jordan Crane – Fantagraphics, #1716
Sammy Harkham, Jason Lutes, Seth – Drawn + Quarterly, #1529

OCT083969 Fight Or Run #1 3.95
This is a very strange little comic from Kevin Huizenga. I’m not quite sure how I feel about it yet, but it expands upon the “video game” segments in Ganges #2 and it’s a neat object. We’ve had this for a little while, check the main floor counter for copies.

SEP083684 Mesmo Delivery Gn Vol 01 12.50
If you didn’t get a chance to pick this up in September when we had some preview copies, make sure to grab it now. This is a gorgeous book. Lots of Quitely and Darrow in there, and beautifully coloured as well. Story’s solid too. A great use of 12 bucks.

SEP084323 Tezukas Black Jack Tp Vol 02 16.95
I have no idea why this is coming out this week, and the HC is not accompanying it. Still, that first volume was just plain awesome, and I’m looking forward to volume 2. I’m just not particularly looking forward to waiting for the hard cover. But I will.

SEP084033 Comics Journal #294 11.99
This month’s issue of The Journal features a big cover interview with our friend Jason which should be quite good. Other features include interviews with Mark Tatulli, Will Elder, Dave Stevens, Steve Gerbert, and Gary Groth’s 2002 interview with Golden Age cartoonist Creig Flessel. Check out an excerpt of the Jason interview here.

Also of Note:

AUG080132 Batman #681 Rip (Note Price) 3.99

It’s the final installment of BATMAN: RIP. Will Batman live or die? I have no idea. I’ve heard rumours. Strange, strange rumours.

SEP082218 Body Bags (One Shot) 5.99
Jason Pearson returns to his cult-classic series BODY BAGS in this all-new one shot. I imagine that a lot of folks have been waiting patiently for 6 or 7 years for this one…

AUG080025 Buffy The Vampire Slayer #19 2.99
Yes folks, the next issue of Buffy is finally available. It’s the conclusion to the FRAY arc and it shoulda been out 2 months ago, what are ya gonna do?

AUG083694 Tales To Suffice #1 3.95
This one has a great cover and a great description, so I’m curious about it. I haven’t read it yet, but how can you not love this:

Yes, you – with the nice teeth and discriminating taste in graphic literature. Do you crave ACTION? SUSPENSE? ROMANCE? Introducing TALES TO SUFFICE, an ALL-NEW, ALL-THRILLING anthology series guaranteed to knock your socks off. DAMSELS IN DISTRESS!! MEN IN TIGHTS!! ZOMBIES IN NECKTIES!! Everything you ever loved about comic books, mercilessly skewered for YOUR amusement! Five senses-shattering stories for the paltry price of one, and SURE to be a collector’s item – So stock up on copies while they’re still cheap!

JUL082211 Walking Dead #55 2.99
True to his word, it looks like Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman really is working hard to get his flagship series back on track. This is the third issue in 2 months, and the series has really been singing lately too. I think we’ll even get another collection soon too.

OCT080001 Previews Vol Xviii #12 (Net) 4.50

Founded in 1987, The Beguiling has set a new standard in Canada for comics and graphic novel retail. Showcasing the largest selection of alternative, underground and avant-garde graphic story telling in the country, The Beguiling has a worldwide reputation for excellence. Among the many accolades afforded the store, the most prestigious was the first-ever Will Eisner Spirit of Retailing Award for excellence in retailing.

In its long history The Beguiling sponsored many book launches, author signings, readings, and other comics events with legendary creators including Robert Crumb, Harlan Ellison, Jamie Hernandez, Neil Gaiman, Joann Sfar, and literally hundreds more. In 2003 several members of The Beguiling staff founded The Toronto Comic Arts Festival, bringing alternative and independent comics creators from around the world to Toronto to celebrate the best of comic art. Held every two years, the show continues to thrive, growing in size with each iteration.

The Beguiling: Your Source For Holiday Gift Giving

We just wanted to write a quick note thanking Tom Spurgeon at ComicsReporter.com for recommending The Beguiling twice in his Holiday Gift Guide. In his post “171 Reasons To Spend Your Shopping Money On Comics This Year,” Spurgeon lists a number of excellent comics, art, and services related to the comics industry to make holiday gift-giving a breeze. It’s a great shopping guide all-around, and we’re particularly pleased to see just how many of his comic and graphic novel selections are in stock and for sale in the store right now… by my count, we’ve got 9 of the first 10 books he mentions (I don’t think we’ve got the Blondie one…).

On the big list, The Beguiling Original Art Store clocks in at #32, with Spurge recommending it as “…a staggering line-up of cartoonists with work available here, from big-title alt-comics pages to more rarely seen work…”. We show up again at entry #152, this time for The Beguiling Bookstore, and particularly for our ability to track down rare and hard-to-find items.

It’s always nice to be recognized for the hard work we put in trying to make the store great. As always, if there’s anything you’re looking for this holiday season, be it original art, graphic novels, prints or whatever, just let us know and we’ll be happy to help you out.
