EYE OF ATROCITY – Superviolent Ukiyo-E art book now in stock

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWould you believe that these insanely gruesome illustrations of Samurai were originally created in 1870? If you want a whole book that is this intense… or moreso… then by all means come pick up THE EYE OF ATROCITY: SUPERVIOLENT ART BY YOSHITOSHI, the Ukiyo-E Master Series Volume Two. It’s pretty incredible stuff, must be seen to be believed. Located on the second floor.

We also got a restock on the first in the series, SAMURAI GHOST AND MONSTER WARS.

The interiors are even more gruesome than the cover, so if you want a preview keep reading past the cut…!

New From Shintaro Kago – Gruesomelarious Mini-Comics

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOne of our favourite Japanese creators is Shintaro Kago. He’s almost completely unpublished in North America (except for, oddly, VICE Magazine) and he’s an amazing formalist, experimental author AND a purveyor of hiariously satiric filth. We’ve carried some of his self-published books in the past, and on our last trip to Japan we picked up the two newest! “Zombie Play” (written ‘Return of the Living Dead’ on the cover) is a collection of hilarious, billingual Japanese/English zombie gags that are only for the most hardcore fans. We’ve also got his newest, ‘Patent Play’, which is a Japanese-language collection of ‘weird’ inventions turned inside out, often literally. Even in Japanese the illustrations are very… evocative.

Both of these fine books are available on the main floor for the bargain price of $7.

If you want to click “continue reading” down there you can see a couple of samples of some interior pages…!

Abominable Charles Christopher HC 2 – Now In Stock

Just in time for the holidays, we’re quite happy to let you know that The Beguiling is stocking copies of Karl Kerschl’s hit comic The Abominable Charles Christopher! Volume 1 (shown left) is available in softcover, and the just-released volume 2 (shown right) is available as a limited edition HC, wrapped in an embossed, faux suede treatment. The HC collects all of the comics from years three and four of the series, along with additional chapter illustrations and a bonus collection of character sketches and biographies at the end of the book.

We received a slightly panicked phone call this morning just before opening, asking if we still had copies of Chris Ware’s Building Stories in stock. We weren’t terribly surprised; Building Stories is topping many critics’ best-comics-of-the-year lists, and more than a couple best-books-of-the-year lists too. But the actual reason was a little bit more surprising–many online retailers, not to mention the publisher themselves, are temporarily out of stock right now.

It’s tough, as an independent book store, to take a strong inventory position on a book on the pricier side… but when it’s Chris Ware, you just have to do it.

So yes, Virginia, The Beguiling does have copies of Building Stories in stock.

We’ve also got the phenomenal and very rare Multi-Story Building Portfolio, a collection of prints that can be collected as is, or cut-out and assembled to create the building featured in Building Stories.

Note to our mailorder friends: There is no way we can get this to you before Christmas, probably not until late January given our current shipping schedule, so please consider that before asking for a copy to be shipped to you. We recommend that you check comic and independent book stores in your area first.
