Jack Kirby’s Concept Art for Lord of Light/Science Fiction Land – Warehouse Find!

KirbyConceptCoverHere’s a neat treat for Kirby fans! We’ve recently uncovered a charming, 80s-binding art book we did ages ago featuring rarely seen Jack Kirby art.

In 1979 Kirby, was approached to create concept artwork for the adaptation of the 1967 novel Lord of Light by Roger Zelazny. The massive sets required to make the film would then be turned into a theme park in  Aurora, Colorado.

While Lord of Light was never made into a movie, you can learn more about the fate of this film in Ben Affleck’s Argo.

Lord of Light and the Permanent Structures of Science Fiction Land is available on the second floor for $15.

IN STOCK: The Less Than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal

weaverThe first two volumes of the popular webcomic The Less than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal are now in stock! Are you not familiar with the series? Then try this on for size:

In the span of a single day, Amal calls off his arranged marriage, comes out to his conservative parents, promptly gets disowned, goes on a bender… and wakes up the next morning to find TJ, a lanky, dreadlocked vagrant, frying eggs and singing Paul Simon in his kitchen. TJ claims that the two have made a drunken pact to drive all the way from Berkeley to Providence. As it happens, Amal promised his sister he’d be there for her graduation from Brown University. And TJ, well… TJ has his own reasons. The agreement is simple: Amal does the driving; TJ pays the way – but a 3500 mile journey leaves plenty of time for things to get complicated.

Intended for print, volumes 1 and 2 (Poor Boys and Pilgrims and Wanderlust Kings) represents the first 2/3 of the story, and are $15 each. Plenty of time to get caught up before volume 3 comes out in 2014!

IN STOCK: The Freddie Stories by Lynda Barry

barryFrom publisher Drawn & Quarterly:

The Freddie Stories traces a year in the life of Freddie, the youngest member of the dysfunctional Mullen family. These four-panel entries–each representing an episode in the life of Freddie–bring to life adolescence, pimples and all. No matter what happens, it all seems to go wrong for Freddie–he’s set up as an arsonist, mercilessly teased in school, and bossed around by classmates. With consummate skill, Lynda Barry writes about the cruelty of children at this most vulnerable age when the friends they make and the paths they choose can forever change their lives. In The Freddie Stories every word of dialogue, every piece of narration, and every dark line evokes adolescent angst.

These short, moving stories are collected from Barry’s beloved Ernie Pook’s Comeek, which was serialized across North America for two decades. Re-packaged here with a brand-new introduction from Lynda Barry, The Freddie Stories is an adult tale about just how hard it is to be a teenager–a classic Barry work alongside her cult masterpiece novel Cruddy–poignant, insightful, and true.

Wow! How can you say ‘No’ to any of that?! The Freddie Stories is $19.95, and we’d love for you to come get one!
