It’s the Toronto Japanese Film Festival 2015!

The Beguiling and Page & Panel: The TCAF Shop are proud to sponsor the 2015 Toronto Japanese Film Festival, taking place June 11th to 26th at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre. There’s all kinds of great films being screened this year, and tickets are available now at http://www.ticketweb.ca/snl/EventListings.action?orgId=97962&pl=jccc.

A special thing about the lineup this year? There are six (6!) films screening that are being adapted from manga! This is pretty exciting:

10518971_651934198236375_463625674378646293_n

Tokyo Tribe, adapted from the manga by Santa Inoue.
This manga was partially published by Tokyopop, but it’s now out of print. That hasn’t stopped manga fans from snapping up old copies and loving it, though! And this film adaptation by Sion Sono has been drawing raves! Screening June 12. This screening sponsored in part by The Beguiling. Featuring a short introduction by Christopher Butcher of The Beguiling.

poster2Thermae Romae II, adapted from the manga by Mari Yamazaki.
The complete series of these excellent books are in print in English, in three great omnibus editions! Screens June 23rd. This screening sponsored in part by Page & Panel: The TCAF Shop.

Little Forest, adapted from the manga by Daisuke Igarashi
This particular series hasn’t be translated into English, but Igarashi’s amazing visual tour-de-force manga Children of the Sea is available, and it touches on many of the same themes.

Hot Road, adapted from the manga by Taku Tsumugi
Her Granddaughter, adapted from the manga by Keiko Nishi
Maestro!, adapted from the manga by Akira Saso
Unfortunately these authors don’t have anything in print in English, but all of these manga have been critically acclaimed, as have the films!

So once again, we strongly encourage you to check out some of the many great films screening at this year’s Toronto Japanese Film Festival! Full information on the films, schedule, and tickets can be found at http://jccc.on.ca/torontojff/.

Lorenzo Mattotti Exhibition on until June 26th

mattotti_event

TCAF may be over, but the brilliant exhibition of original artwork by TCAF Featured Guest Lorenzo Mattotti will continue until June 26th! Drawn from his masterful adaptation of Hansel & Gretel, this exhibition of originals is truly incredible, and we strongly recommend you visit it while it’s still up!  Our thanks to The Istituto Italiano di Cultura for their incredible support.

HANSEL & GRETEL: An exhibit by Lorenzo Mattotti
runs at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura (496 Huron St.)
from May 9th through June 26th
Open Mon – Fri: 10:00am. – 1:00pm.; 2:30pm. – 4:30pm.

About Hansel & Gretel: In 1812, the Brothers Grimm published the story of “Hansel and Gretel” about a brother and sister who must survive abandonment by their parents and being captured by a hungry witch.

In 2007, Mattotti created compelling black-and-white artwork for the fairy tale. While not in the traditional graphic novel format, this illustrated short story alternates between images and words, allowing for full spreads of the artist’s drawings, punctuated by intermittent spreads of text. There is no question that Gaiman is an incredibly gifted wordsmith, and his retelling hearkens back to the Grimms’s original narrative. The most inspirational part of this book is Mattotti’s artwork. Pitch-black India ink is used to great effect, creating dark and terrifying landscapes that threaten to envelop the tiny figures of the children.

About Lorenzo Mattotti: Lorenzo Mattotti is an Italian comics and graphic artist living in Paris. He is a Featured Guest of TCAF 2015, and attends the festival with the support of the Istituto Italiano di Cultura.

Mattotti’s English-language works include Fires and Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (from NBM, which won an Eisner Award in 2003) , Murmur (Penguin Books), Chimera (Ignatz/Fantagraphics) and The Raven (Fantagraphics). Mattotti also contributed to the groundbreaking alternative comix anthology RAW, and is a frequent contributor to The New Yorker–including many cover illustrations.

In addition to his comics and illustration work, Lorenzo Mattotti is a highly respected multi-disciplinary artists, from reinterpreting reinterpreting the models of the most famous fashion designers for “Vanity” magazine, to designing the title sequences for the film “Eros” by Wong Kar-wai, to directing an animated version of his work in the animation anthology “Fears of the Dark.”

CONTEST: Win Passes to see SETH’S DOMINION at Hot Docs!

Seth's Dominion_Le dominion de Seth poster

The Toronto Comic Arts Festival is pleased to partner with the HOT DOCS Festival in presenting Seth’s Dominion, the award-winning Documentary on the life and work of Canadian cartoonist Seth! Directed by Luc Chamberland, and produced by The National Film Board of Canada, Seth’s Dominion has been highly-anticipated by comics fans and makers since it was first announced, and we’re thrilled to be a part of its premiere Toronto screening as part of the Hot Docs Festival.

The film will screen three times as part of the Festival: Friday April 24 @ 8:45pm at TIFF Bell Lightbox; Saturday April 25 @ 1:00pm at The Royal Cinema; Thursday April 30 @ 9:45pm at Scotiabank Theatre. Tickets are now available for all screenings, via the Hot Docs website: http://goo.gl/rJUxdj.

Here’s the description from the Hot Docs Website:

“Memory and how it moulds us rests at the heart of Luc Chamberland’s delightful film Seth’s Dominion, which celebrates the Canadian cartoonist known as Seth. “You’re not aiming for the detail so much as the overall feeling,” Seth says of his artistic process. Through moving animated vignettes that are narrated by Seth himself, the stillness of the comic book page is brought to life as we are given a window into Seth’s inner world. Childhood moments are captured with emotional vividness, while a late night stroll lost in thought is evoked with intimate attention to detail. We also learn of Seth’s manifold side projects, including his 1950s city of Dominion: an idiosyncratic cardboard creation 10 years in the making. Dotted with warm testimony from cartoonist friends Joe Matt and Chester Brown, Seth’s Dominionprovides a thoughtful portrait of a man who, like so many of his comic character creations, wrestles with a present that’s constantly moving into the past. ” – Description by Justin Mah
