9781606999486-cosplayersThe Beguiling is proud to welcome our long-time pal Dash Shaw, creator of the graphic novels Cosplayers, New School, Body World, and so many more for a very special signing at the shop! See Dash is in town because one of his comics has been turned into a film, and it’s screening at The Toronto International Film Festival, or TIFF, from September 11th through the 16th! Hooray!

Here’s where it gets super interesting: The film is screening at the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema (around the corner) on Tuesday, September 13, at 4:00pm. So Dash is gonna come by a do a little signing and meet and greet at The Beguiling afterwards, at 6:30pm! Go see the movie (tickets available here) and then come get your books signed, or pick up his new one COSPLAYERS, or just say hi to a great guy who makes great comics (my favourite is BodyWorld, but they’re all good).

The film sounds really great too, check out the synopsis below!

My Entire High School Sinking into the Sea
Directed by Dash Shaw
USA, 2016, 75m
U.S. Premiere
No matter your age, part of you never outgrows high school, for better or worse. Dash Shaw, known for such celebrated graphic novels as Cosplayers and New School, brings his subjective, dreamlike sense of narrative; his empathy for outsiders and their desire to connect; and his rich, expressive drawing style to his first animated feature. Packed with action but seen from the inside out, My Entire High School Sinking into the Sea is about friends overcoming their differences and having each other’s backs in times of crisis, and its marvelously complex characters are voiced by Jason Schwartman, Lena Dunham, Reggie Watts, Maya Rudolph, Susan Sarandon,  Alex Karpovsky and John Cameron Mitchell. w/ Synopsis courtesy Film Society of Lincoln Center.

A tremendously affecting and poigniant look at not just the horrors of war, but the guilt and struggle of the survivors, Grave of the Fireflies is perhaps legendary in animation circles for being one of the saddest stories told in the medium. If you’ve never seen it, you absolutely have to.

Arrive early to meet fellow anime fans and check out series sponsor The Beguiling’s awesome merch table. Prizes will be raffled before the screening courtesy of sponsors Beguiling Books & Art / Page and Panel.

Grave of the Fireflies
JAPAN 1988 89min. PG
Directed by Isao Takahata

As the Empire of the Sun crumbles upon itself and a rain of firebombs falls upon Japan, the final death march of a nation is echoed in millions of smaller tragedies. This is the story of Seita and his younger sister Setsuko, two children born at the wrong time, in the wrong place, and now cast adrift in a world that lacks not the care to shelter them, but simply the resources. Forced to fend for themselves in the aftermath of fires that swept entire cities from the face of the earth, their doomed struggle is both a tribute to the human spirit and the stuff of nightmares. Beautiful, yet at times brutal and horrifying. Based on the retellings of survivor Nosaka Akiyuki and directed by Iaso Takahata (co-founder, with Hayao Miyazaki, of Japan’s legendary Studio Ghibli,) Grave Of The Fireflies has been universally hailed as an artistic and emotional tour de force. Now digitally remastered and restored, it is one of the rare films that truly deserves to be called a masterpiece.

Civil War II: Choosing Sides #5 Regular and Variant Cover Signing
Featuring artist Ramon Perez and Writer Chip Zdarsky
@ The Beguiling, 601 Markham Street, Toronto
Wednesday, August 31st (Release Day) from 5pm to 7pm
Free to attend

We’re very happy to announce that two titanic Toronto creators will be on hand at the shop to sign copies of the most Canadian Marvel comic book of at least the last decade, on the very day of its release!

Come meet Ramón Pérez (Hawkeye, A Tale of Sand, Civil War II: Choosing Sides) and Chip Zdarsky (Prison Funnies) as they sign copies of the comic that got them in the news! And they’ll probably be on the news again soon about it! Ramón and Chip should be on hand from 5pm to 7pm on Wednesday, August 31st, and will sign whatever you bring them (or buy at The Beguiling, wink-nudge). The Beguiling, for its part, will have lots of copies of both the regular cover and the Justin Trudeau fronted variant cover of Civil War II: Choosing Sides, though we’ll probably be limiting the number of copies you’re allowed to buy on that one (TBD).

Alright, see you on August 31st!
