About the Books

MILLARWORLD ANNUAL 2017
The MILLARWORLD ANNUAL is back! After an international hunt for the world’s best new comic book talent, a fresh crop of creators are taking on MARK MILLAR’S hit characters. With stories from HUCK to SUPERIOR, EMPRESS to NEMESIS, the second ANNUAL is an instant collector’s item.

QUEEN STREET
Meet Aimee– an overworked junior partner at a prestigious law firm in Manila, Philippines. One storybook romance, four back-to-back flights, and nine years later, in the small of mind but big in spirit town, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada, she now lives; still overworked. But as a lower class serial-full-timer and mother to her only child, Melodie– an intelligent and eccentric seven-year-old, whose big personality is only rivaled by her even bigger imagination. Join them and a cast of unlikely characters just as confused and lost, as they stumble blindly for twelve consecutive hours through the beautifully disastrous comedy of Life. Don’t miss this breakout semi-autobiographical slice of life tale from Emmanuelle Chateauneuf, depicting the modern world as seen through the eyes of a woman and a girl, navigating the meanings of family and purpose in the complexities of simply being alive.

September 23: Seth Tobocman presents WAR IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD at Church of St. Stephen-in-the-Fields

September 23rd, acclaimed graphic novelist Seth Tobocman will present War in the Neighbourhood, a classic study of anti-gentrification activism in New York, recently re-issued by Ad Astra Comix. At a time when gentrification threatens to change the face of Kensington Market, and other areas of Toronto which have traditionally been home to those on the margins, this story is more important for us than ever. We’ll also hear from some local activists (details to be confirmed).

We’re very excited about this event, and we hope you can join us!

Part of the Faith, Art and Activism festival, an annual collaboration between St Stephen’s, the Trinity College Chaplaincy, and the Student Christian Movement.

We are co-sponsoring this event with St. Stephen-in-the-Fields!

We’ll have tons of copies of both titles for your purchasing and receiving-signatures-in-said-purchased-copies pleasure (in fact copies are now available in-store!)

More details TBA!

About Patrick Kyle:
Patrick Kyle lives and works in Toronto, ON. He is the author of the graphic novels Black Mass (2012), Distance Mover (2014) and Don’t Come In Here (2016). At the 2016 Doug Wright Awards, he won the Pigskin Peters Award for New Comics #6 and 7.

About “Everywhere Disappeared”:
A keen observer of the absurd, Patrick Kyle’s stories defamiliarize the machinations of life, work and art with droll dialogue and his angular, humanely geometric drawing and sci-fi settings that recall set design more than satellite images. Kyle’s figures may be foreign, his settings strange, but his stories resonate deeply.

About GG:
GG lives and works in the small Canadian prairie city where she grew up during the 1980s. In this pre-Internet era, isolated geographically and culturally, drawing and making up stories was the means to connect to something more. It was romantic and lonely. In 2016 she was included in The Best American Comics edited by Roz Chast.

About “I’m Not Here”:
A young, second-generation woman wanders through her city and memories encountering the world through a camera’s lens; her independence pulled by the gravity of familial responsibility. She drifts until she encounters what could possibly be her potential self.

NEW IN THE ART STORE: DASH SHAW & JASON LITTLE

We’re thrilled to now be offering new art in our online store from Dash Shaw and Jason Little!

Dash Shaw has supplied us with some gorgeous original background paintings from his animated film My Entire High School
Sinking into the Sea, and has combined them with acetate overlays reproducing the line art which he then been panted in gouache
paint! (Dash explains his process in a video you can view HERE)

The Beguiling is the only place to find original art from My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea, and we couldn’t be happier about that!

Jason Little has also added a number of originals from artist Jason Little to the store from his 2015 comic Borb! These pieces include pages from the books, covers to foreign editions, t-shirt designs and lots more! Jason’s detailed, intricate art manages to contain both heartbreak and humour in equal, black-hearted doses.

MOTHRA: Kaiju! @ The Revue

KAIJU! At the Revue!
Sponsored by The Beguiling Books & Art!
MOTHRA
Wednesday, August 30, 6:45PM
Tickets $10-$13
Directed by Ishirô Honda

JAPAN 1961 101min. PG

The Beguiling’s monthly anime series goes live-action this month with Toho’s classic Mothra. Amidst a pantheon of fire-breathing dinosaurs, flying lizards and three-headed behemoths – not to mention their various robotic incarnations – who would think that one of the most enduring characters in Toho’s kaiju (“giant monster”) universe would be the colourful, Mother Earth-loving Mothra? We sure think so. Mothra marks a departure in both tone and colour of previous kaiju films. Gone is the dark, metaphorical havoc brought on by Godzilla’s nuclear stomping of Tokyo. While the irradiated subtext is still obvious and Mothra’s wrath ain’t a laughing matter, the film borders on comedic whimsy, as clumsy reporter hero Sen-Chan (Frankie Sakai) comes off as a buffoonish Lou Costello, and the miniature twins (played by the singing duo “The Peanuts”) are downright adorable. No wonder Mothra wants them back.

The Beguiling will be on site with a merch table, plus prizes to raffle off!

Presented in 2K. Dubbed English.

Special event. Admission $13 General, $10 Members, Seniors and Students. All membership benefits welcome.
