MAQUIA: WHEN THE PROMISED FLOWER BLOOMS
TICKET GIVEAWAY!
ELEVEN ARTS has been kind enough to supply us with one double pass to attend a screening of MAQUIA: WHEN THE PROMISED FLOWER BLOOMS, in theatres July 28 & 29!

“The people of Iorph live far away from the lands of men, weaving the happenings of each day into a fabric called Hibiol. They live for centuries while maintaining their youthful appearance. Maquia, an orphaned Iorph girl, lives her life in an oasis surrounded by friends, yet somehow feels “alone”. But the tranquil lives of the Iorph are shattered in an instant when the Mezarte army invades their territory on a dragon fleet, seeking the blood that grants the Iorph long life. Maquia manages to escape, but loses her friends and her home in the chaos. She then encounters an orphaned baby who is “alone”. Maquia raises this boy “Ariel”, with the help of some new friends. But as the era changes, the bond between Maquia and Ariel changes too, amidst a backdrop of racial tensions between the Iorph and the Mezarte. This is a story of irreplaceable time, woven by two lonely people who can only find solace in each other.”To enter, send an email to beguilingcontests@gmail.com with the subject line “BLOOMED” and you’ll be entered in our raffle! One winner will be chosen July 20th, and can pick which screening they would like to attend!

SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD SCREENING AT CORKTOWN COMMON PARK JULY 12!

We’re co-presenting a screening of a film obviously very near-and-dear to our hearts, Edgar Wright’s adaptation of Brian Lee O’Malley’s SCOTT PILGRIM!

SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD captures the Annex neighbourhood at a time when Honest Ed’s was still standing and Lee’s Palace still featured its original mural (not to mention a little place called THE BEGUILING!).

Keeping the laughs coming, POLE is an absurdist slapstick comedy about a turf war between two postering professionals who happen to be working the same beat at the same time near Dupont station. OK-TV is a parodical short about some recognizable Toronto figures: Toronto City Councillors, cyclists, police officers, and crosswalk guards play their part in the city’s daily “news” coverage.

Films @ Sundown (9:15pm)
Eats & Treats @ 7pm by Buster’s Sea Cove, Sweet Ride, & popcorn at the festival canteen
Free yoga class @7pm by YOGAthletix

Free / PWYC (suggested donation $10), not a ticketed event

Accessible venue
Films are screened with captioning

AARON MANCZYK DOUBLE LAUNCH FOR ASCEND & LOVE YOU BAE JULY 12

Not only will there be a smorgasbord of new books from Aaron to buy but also a visual feast of Aaron’s original artwork in our gallery space!

Aaron’s body of work has always contained a range of humour and emotion that rejects any throughline, from 80s action-movie indulgence to subtle, refined storytelling, and his two new books show that beautifully, showcasing two sides of Manczyk’s consistently great work.

Everything kicks off at 7PM at The Beguiling on July 12th! See you there, and bring your appetites!

About Girls With Slingshots:

Danielle Corsetto’s Girls with Slingshots debuted in September of 2004, and ran for over 10 years, winning a Reuben Award, publishing thousands of strips, and gaining thousands upon thousands of loyal readers. By the time of the comic’s grand finale in March of 2015, GwS was one of the biggest names in online comics, with countless fans visiting daily to read about the lives, loves and adventures of Hazel, Jamie, and their friends.
As the strip’s popularity grew, TEN softcover collections were compiled. But after ten years of printing and reprinting, half of the volumes are sold out or hard to find. So, now that GwS has seen its last update, it’s time to send this legend of a comic strip off in the collection it deserves.
