FCBD Update! Jay Baruchel & Kalman Andrasofszky signing @ P&P! Chip Zdarsky signed Spider-Man comics!

Hey there, we’ve got 2 big updates for FCBD!

First up, we’re happy to announce that actor/comedian/writer Jay Baruchel and writer/artist Kalman Andrasofszky will be signing at Page & Panel from 2pm-4pm! Jay and Kalman have the lead story in Chapterhouse’s Captain Canuck Free Comic Book Day issue! You may also know Jay Baruchel from his many film and television appearances, including Knocked Up, Tropic Thunder, and This is the End, among many others. So that’s pretty cool! Again, that’s just at P&P, not The Beguiling (this time around…).

Speaking of signed books, Chip Zdarsky, the writer of the all new Spectacular Spider-Man, came in to both shops and signed all of our copies of his story in the Marvel SECRET EMPIRE/SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN free comic book day title! Chip was nice enough to come sign all of our copies even though he’ll be outta town, whatta champ! Thanks, Chip!

We’ve also had some other awesome additions, with Jenn Woodall and Ally Rom Colthoff joining our signings. See you Friday! The full schedule and list of available books is here: https://www.beguilingbooksandart.com/sat-may-6-free-comic-book-day/

SAT APR 29: Authors for Indies Day @ The Beguiling

Authors for Indies
Featuring Brian McLachalan and Claudio Ghirardo
Saturday, April 29th, 2017, 11am-4pm
@ The Beguiling, 319 College Street
Free to attend

The Beguiling Books & Art is joining in for its first Authors for Indies Day at the new shop location! Authors for Indies is an event where selected authors come hang out at independent book stores, and volunteer their time as store clerks, recommending great reads! We think The Beguiling is the first comics-focused book store to take part,  and hopefully it’s something we’ll be able to do for years to come.

Participating authors:

Brian McLachlan, 11am-3pm: Brian is the author of the young-person-oriented Draw Out The Story: Ten Secrets to Creating Your Own Comics, and What Noise Do I Make?, a children’s picture book, both published by Owlkids. Brian has a wide range of taste in comics, and is just as happy suggesting great graphic novels for grownups as he is some of the best comics out there for younger readers.

Claudio Ghirardo, 3pm-4pm: A graduate of the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon & Graphic Art, Inc., Claudio Ghirardo contributed to small press zines before focusing on freelance illustration and then being a full time artist. He has his own monthly experimental webcomic, “UNTITLED” where he combines modern art with sequential storytelling. He publishes his own graphic novels/zines, and has contributed to numerous anthologies.

So we’ll see you this Saturday, April 29th! And we hope that wherever you are, you’ll stop by an Indie Bookstore, meet an author, and pick a book or two up!

Adolescent Demo Division,  from Vertigo. This will be a great, free event! Page & Panel will be on-site doing book sales, and although we’re not actually hosting it, we encourage you to attend!

DAVE MCKEAN’S ‘BLACK DOG: THE DREAMS OF PAUL NASH’ MAY 12TH

TCAF and Seneca College present:

BLACK DOG: The Dreams of Paul Nash, by Dave McKean
Friday, May 11th, 2017, Doors at 8:30pm, Performance at 9:00pm

@ The Masonic Temple, 888 Yonge St
Tickets: $10. Purchase at tcafblackdog.eventbrite.com

TCAF, The Toronto Comic Arts Festival and Seneca College are proud to present the incredible live performance of BLACK DOG: The Dreams of Paul Nash, by Dave McKean, as part of TCAF 2017. This special multimedia presentation will be performed by McKean, alongside Cellist and Barintone Matthew Sharp and Violinist Clare Haythornthwaite.

Traveling to Canada after its performances in England after being commissioned by the Lakes International Comic Art Festival, Black Dog – The Dreams of Paul Nash is a multimedia performance and new graphic novel by illustrator, comic artist, filmmaker and musician Dave McKean. Part of 14-18 NOW, the UK’s arts programme for the First World War centenary, McKean explores the work of Paul Nash, one of the most important British artists of the twentieth century, whose First World War experiences inspired him to create paintings of disturbing, lasting power.

Doors will open at 8:30pm, with the performance scheduled to begin at 9:00pm. A short Q&A will follow, but there will be no signing at this event. Autograph opportunties will take place at the main Festival on Saturday May 13 and Sunday May 14, see TorontoComics.com for details.

I’d like to explore Paul Nash’s role in the birth of modernism and surrealism, and how those movements were actually witnessed by Nash in the dream-/nightmare-like battlefields of the war. He used the landscape that he loved to try to deal with what he’d been through, and to try and find calm and solace beyond.’ Dave McKean

This performance is presented by Seneca College, and by LICAF: The Lakes International Comic Art Festival, with special thanks to Dark Horse Comics.

This presentation is part of The Toronto Comic Arts Festival, a citywide celebration of comics, graphic novels, and their authors. For more information and full festival programme, visit torontocomics.com.
