Sorry for the late list this week, I was out of town at the Diamond Retailer Seminar for comic book store retailers. I’m actually there as I write this, so since I’ve got a little bit of time I’ll be happy to add a little more information about some of these titles… And hey, if anyone says anything worthwhile I’ll let you know.

By the by, the first retailer question was “Why the hell is the Fray trade out of print?” which, as someone who has a lot of Buffy customers, I feel is a very valid question. Dark Horse’s answer is middling and awful. Look guys, the sad behind the scenes of the comics industry!

Dude, I have no idea why we are getting this. But Garth Ennis (PREACHER) and Darick Robertson (TRANSMETROPOLITAN) are doing a pretty bang-up job on The Boys in general. Are you reading it? It’s a pretty cynical take on mainstream superhero comics, working with the idea that most superheroes are awful screw-ups, and it’s just PR and government agencies keeping their tragedies from making the headlines. Then Ennis has a whole bunch of bad-asses try to tear the whole thing down. It’s part superhero parody, part massive conspiracy, part comics history lesson. There’s three trades out now and you can find it on the Garth Ennis rack on the second floor.

So are you reading Criminal yet? It’s one of my favourite books coming out right now, and on a more-or-less monthly basis. Along with titles like The Walking Dead, The Boys, Warren Ellis’ books from Avatar, and maybe Young Liars from Vertigo, it seems like it’s a really good times to enjoy monthly comics, even if you aren’t a superhero fan. For a long time there, your choices for monthly comics were “Superhero” or “Vertigo”, and I have to say I’m pretty happy to see a new middle-ground of recommended and enjoyable titles… Actually, the ongoing series of BPRD and Hellboy don’t hurt in that regard either. So yeah, if you’re reading any of those titles, then you’d probably enjoy the rest of them too, and we’re happy to make further recommendations for good books, just let us know.

Drawn & Quarterly have just released two beautiful new books in their “Petit Livres” series of little books and so we’re going to throw a party! The Beguiling is proud to present the official launch party for Matt Forsythe’s Ojingogo and Pat Shewchuk and Marek Colek’s Pohadky, on Saturday September 27th at 5pm at The Central restaurant, adjacent to The Beguiling!

Matthew Forsythe is an acclaimed illustrator, blogger, and co-founder of popular illustration website Drawn.ca. His fantastic first graphic novella, Ojingogo, has already been nominated for numerous comics and publishing awards, and all before its official release! Ojingogo is an otherworldly pantomime about a girl, her squid, and the creatures and calamities they experience together, is an intrinsically expressive and deeply rewarding journey. Ojingogo is accessible for all ages, tossing aside traditional narrative conventions in favour of creating its own world, language and rules that anyone can find a home of their own in.

Pat Shewchuk and Marek Colek’s Pohadky is an illustrated marvel; the Grimm fairy tales given life beyond the limitations of their text. Translated as “folk tales” or “storybook”, Pohadky provides a tapestry of interwoven fables and morose, allegorical iconography, bringing a harsh light to the greed, loss, and submission that marks the origins of so many cultural folk tales and legends. Heavily influenced by their respective cultural backgrounds–Colek fascinated with the artistic and narrative elements in the folklore of the Czech Republic, and Shewchuk immersed in the investigation of the symbols and pictography of pre-Christian Ukrainian decorative folk arts–the artists have created a work that balances delicate, richly detailed characters and a sharp but muted visual style, and in the process have created a title that exists as so much more than mere fairy tales.

The Release Party will feature short presentations from the works as well as a moderated Q&A session with the author/artists, followed by a signing. The event is completely free to attend and appropriate for all ages, and both books will be available for sale at the event.

Please join us in welcoming internationally acclaimed graphic novelists Igort (Italy) and David B (France) on the occasion of the release of their newest works, Baobab and Nocturnal Conspiracies. The evening will include a slide presentation of the authors works, an on-stage discussion and a question and answer session moderated by The Beguiling’s Owner Peter Birkemoe beginning at 7:00pm. Following the presentation the authors will be available to sign their books.

Their new titles, and many books from their backlist in both English and French are available now at The Beguiling and will be available for sale at the event (Cash and Credit Card only, no Debit at the event).

IGORT is the creator of the international publishing effort known as “Ignatz”, which simultaneously releases new comics and graphic novels in numerous languages and countries around the world. His own work for the line, Baobab, is a sprawling epic that will eventually amount to over 600 pages. With a career spanning nearly 30 years, he has created a wealth of notable comics albums. His works published in English include the first 3 installments of Baobab and the graphic novel 5 Is The Perfect Number.

DAVID B. is a founding member of L’Association, a group of French cartoonists who banded together as publishers in 1990 and have revolutionized European comics with their groundbreaking approach to format, subject matter, and style. He has received many awards, including the French Alph’ Art award for comics excellence in 2000, and he was cited as European Cartoonist of the Year in 1998 by The Comics Journal. His works published in North America include Epileptic, Babel, and several stories in the anthology Mome. He lives in France.

This event is generously supported by the Italian Cultural Institute, the cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States and the French Consulate of Toronto.

The Beguiling and The Toronto Comic Arts Festival are proud to continue to sponsor Toronto’s The Word On The Street literary festival on Sunday, September 28th from 11am-6pm on Queen’s Park Circle in Toronto. 2008 will feature another full day of comics and graphic novel related programming, including readings, presentations, and workshops for fans of all ages and interests!

Writer Russell Lissau will be signing at The Beguiling this Friday, August 29th, from 5pm to 7pm! Russell will be signing copies of the FINAL ISSUE of smash all-ages title The Batman Strikes! as well as copies of his other work including HOPE: NEW ORLEANS, a benefit book for victims of the hurricanes that ravaged New Orleans.

Also signing this Friday will be Toronto’s own Howard Wong, author of After The Cape from Image Comics. Very much not a title for all-ages, After The Cape is the gripping story of a man who gave up being a superhero to provide for his family, and how that decision slowly destroyed his life.

Both authors will be on hand to help us kick off our end-of-summer sale (details shortly) this weekend.

Visitors to The Toronto Comic Arts Festival will likely remember the spectacular Transmission-X installation room, featuring original art, prints, posters, and life-sized cut-outs of the characters of many of Toronto’s best comics artists. Particularly striking were the prints of artist Michael Cho, featuring a limited but vivid colour palette, and a mix of quiet Toronto neighborhood scenes and bold and bright adventurers.

The Beguiling is pleased to announce that we will now be selling these prints outside of the confines of festivals and conventions, in store. The prints come in two sizes, and retail for between $30 and $50. In addition, we’ve had a number of these prints framed in the handsome black frame style you see above and to the right, and framed prints run between $130 and $150.
