We’re serious about Monday. No foolin’. See you around the store!

NEW IN STOCK: Barrel of Monkeys!

barrelWe are pleased to say that Barrel of Monkeys by French duo Florent Ruppert and Jérôme Mulot is finally in-stock at The Beguiling.

Both hilarious and biting, this book is exciting cartooning in action. Phenakistoscopes, stereographs, and some of the most playful panel layouts you’ve read in ages, Barrel of Monkeys makes you un-pack and re-wrap your own baggage of what comics are supposed to look like (let along how to read them). Follow these friends as they irreverently explore the depths of sex and death, the only two things really worth writing about anyways.

An impressive debut by new publisher Rebus Books, Barrel of Monkeys is also Beguiling-Approved because the principle translator is none other than our very own Peter Birkemoe! With a Toronto connection like that, how can you not come and check this book out!

INSTOCK: Mini-Comics by Yumi Sakugawa

Milk and Moo, There Is No Right Way To Meditate, Intergalactic Telepathic Pen Pal and Other Short Stories, Mundane Fortunes for the Next Ten Billion Years and Other Stories – What do all these titles have in common? They are all wonderful comics created by the talented Yumi Sakugawa. If you’ve never read Sakugawa’s work, now’s a great time to get on board; Mundane Fortunes was recently selected as one of the Notable Comics of 2012 by the Best American Comics anthology editors. Plus, if you start reading her work now, then you’ll be more than ready to chat with this SoCal artist when she comes to TCAF in May! Lots of reasons to love reading new comics! These comics are $5 each, and available on the main floor.

INSTOCK: New Books from Floating World Comics

koch cover We’ve just received a couple of really cool looking bookings from Portland’s own Floating World Comics: Field Studies by Aidan Koch, and D.I.Y. Magic by Anthony Alvarado.

Following up her dreamy books The Whale and The Blonde Woman, Koch presents Field Studiesa collection of 90 drawings done between January and November of 2012. “Taken as a whole they form an illustrated essay – a year in the life of an artist on the road,” says the publisher. Copies are $13.00, and you might have to fight me for one.

diy magicNext up is D.I.Y. Magic, a book about magic as, “a state where the mind lets go of the normal way of being and is opened up to an experience of existence as a whole that is bigger and without time.” Holy cow! If that doesn’t sound awesome enough, this book also features plenty of interior illustrations by the likes of Ron Rege Jr., Malachi Ward, Aidan Koch, Inés Estrada, Farel Dalrymple, Lala Albert, and many more. $13.95. Come get it.
