We’ve just received a couple of really cool looking bookings from Portland’s own Floating World Comics: Field Studies by Aidan Koch, and D.I.Y. Magic by Anthony Alvarado.
Following up her dreamy books The Whale and The Blonde Woman, Koch presents Field Studies, a collection of 90 drawings done between January and November of 2012. “Taken as a whole they form an illustrated essay – a year in the life of an artist on the road,” says the publisher. Copies are $13.00, and you might have to fight me for one.
Next up is D.I.Y. Magic, a book about magic as, “a state where the mind lets go of the normal way of being and is opened up to an experience of existence as a whole that is bigger and without time.” Holy cow! If that doesn’t sound awesome enough, this book also features plenty of interior illustrations by the likes of Ron Rege Jr., Malachi Ward, Aidan Koch, Inés Estrada, Farel Dalrymple, Lala Albert, and many more. $13.95. Come get it.

The first two volumes of the popular webcomic The Less than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal are now in stock! Are you not familiar with the series? Then try this on for size:
In the span of a single day, Amal calls off his arranged marriage, comes out to his conservative parents, promptly gets disowned, goes on a bender… and wakes up the next morning to find TJ, a lanky, dreadlocked vagrant, frying eggs and singing Paul Simon in his kitchen. TJ claims that the two have made a drunken pact to drive all the way from Berkeley to Providence. As it happens, Amal promised his sister he’d be there for her graduation from Brown University. And TJ, well… TJ has his own reasons. The agreement is simple: Amal does the driving; TJ pays the way – but a 3500 mile journey leaves plenty of time for things to get complicated.
Intended for print, volumes 1 and 2 (Poor Boys and Pilgrims and Wanderlust Kings) represents the first 2/3 of the story, and are $15 each. Plenty of time to get caught up before volume 3 comes out in 2014!
The Freddie Stories traces a year in the life of Freddie, the youngest member of the dysfunctional Mullen family. These four-panel entries–each representing an episode in the life of Freddie–bring to life adolescence, pimples and all. No matter what happens, it all seems to go wrong for Freddie–he’s set up as an arsonist, mercilessly teased in school, and bossed around by classmates. With consummate skill, Lynda Barry writes about the cruelty of children at this most vulnerable age when the friends they make and the paths they choose can forever change their lives. In The Freddie Stories every word of dialogue, every piece of narration, and every dark line evokes adolescent angst.
These short, moving stories are collected from Barry’s beloved Ernie Pook’s Comeek, which was serialized across North America for two decades. Re-packaged here with a brand-new introduction from Lynda Barry, The Freddie Stories is an adult tale about just how hard it is to be a teenager–a classic Barry work alongside her cult masterpiece novel Cruddy–poignant, insightful, and true.
Wow! How can you say ‘No’ to any of that?! The Freddie Stories is $19.95, and we’d love for you to come get one!
